The Australian History Museum is unique in both its collection and its usage. We hold a vast collection numbering over 3,500 items reflecting Australia's history from pre-colonization to today.

The Australian History Museum offers the opportunity to engage with the range of objects and sources within the museum in a hands-on experience of Australia's social history.

Although the collection includes items that range from the everyday to the exquisite, material is acquired primarily for its value to teaching and research. Offering educational programs for students at primary, secondary and tertiary levels to enhance their understanding and insights into Australia's rich history and to create a meaningful educational experience for all students.

  • Annual History Lecture 2008

    This lecture will look at Australian speech during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries when the practice of elocution - the art of speech and eloquence - was at its peak. It will examine this phenomenon when the idea of 'Australian speech' was evolving, and being debated.
    Presented by Joy Damousi, Professor of History and Head of the School of Historical Studies at the University of Melbourne.
